Embarking on a life of travel and remote work brings incredible freedom and opportunity. However, it also necessitates having the right safety net in place, especially when it comes to health and travel-related emergencies. This is where SafetyWing insurance steps in, offering specialized coverage designed for digital nomads, remote workers, and long-term travelers. Whether you’re exploring the bustling streets of Riga or setting up your temporary office in a serene beach town, understanding your insurance options is crucial for a worry-free journey.

Understanding SafetyWing Nomad Insurance
SafetyWing provides two primary insurance plans: Essential and Complete. Both are tailored to the unique needs of location-independent individuals, but they differ in their coverage scope and eligibility.
SafetyWing Essential Plan: Core Travel Medical Coverage
The Essential plan focuses on providing essential medical coverage while you’re traveling outside your home country. It’s a popular choice for nomads seeking affordable protection against unexpected health issues.
Who Can Buy the Essential Plan?
Generally, most individuals worldwide between 14 days and 69 years old can purchase the Essential plan. However, there are a few exceptions:
- Individuals younger than 14 days or older than 69 years.
- Residents of countries under US, UK, EU, or UN sanctions (currently North Korea, Syria, Cuba, and Iran).
- Individuals personally sanctioned under any of the aforementioned regimes.
Where Does the Essential Plan Cover You?
The Essential plan offers coverage worldwide, excluding:
- Belarus, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Puerto Rico, Russia, Syria, Ukraine.
- Your home country (the country where you principally reside and receive mail).
SafetyWing Complete Plan: Enhanced Coverage with Added Benefits
The Complete plan builds upon the Essential plan by offering more comprehensive coverage, including protection in your home country and additional travel-related benefits. This plan is ideal for those who desire broader protection and greater flexibility.
Who Can Buy the Complete Plan?
To be eligible for the Complete plan, you must be between 18 and 64 years old at the time of sign-up. You can maintain coverage beyond this age if you enrolled before turning 64 and continuously renew your plan without any gaps. However, residents (those living there for 6+ months annually) of the following countries are not eligible:
- Belarus, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Iran, Iraq, Republic of Ireland, North Korea, North Sudan, South Sudan, Syria, Palau, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, United Arab Emirates, and the USA and its territories.
Where Does the Complete Plan Cover You?
The Complete plan provides worldwide coverage, including your country of residence, with the exception of any country or area under sanction.
Making a Claim with SafetyWing
Should you need to file a claim, SafetyWing has a straightforward process. To ensure your claim is processed efficiently, you’ll need to provide supporting documentation.
Required Documents for All Claims
- Original receipt(s) as proof of payment.
- Original invoices detailing each service or item cost, not just the total amount.
Additional Documents for Medical Claims
- Medical reports outlining your symptoms, the onset date, diagnosis, and treatment plan.
- Any relevant prescriptions or test results.
Additional Documents for Travel-Related Claims
- Original and updated travel itineraries.
- Proof of any transportation delays or disruptions (e.g., airline confirmations or official notices).
- Proof of ownership for lost or stolen belongings.
- Relevant supporting documents such as police reports or incident reports.
Ensure all documents include your full name and relevant dates. Depending on your specific situation, SafetyWing may request additional information. You can submit your claim through your online dashboard. Claims are typically processed and reimbursed within 21 days. If further information is needed, SafetyWing will contact you via email.
Understanding Pre-Existing Conditions
Like most travel insurance providers, SafetyWing has specific definitions and limitations regarding pre-existing conditions.
Definition of Pre-Existing Conditions
Essential Plan
A pre-existing condition under the Essential plan is any illness or injury where:
- You received a prior diagnosis or treatment within 2 years before your policy start date.
- You experienced symptoms within 2 years before your policy start date.*
- There is reasonable medical certainty that the illness or injury existed within 2 years before your policy start date.*
*If you maintain continuous coverage for 364 days, conditions 2 and 3 will no longer apply, except for untreatable conditions expected to worsen over time.
Complete Plan
Under the Complete plan, a pre-existing condition is any illness or injury for which:
- You received treatment or a diagnosis at any point in your life.
- You experienced symptoms within 2 years before your policy start date.
- There is reasonable medical certainty that the illness or injury existed within 2 years before your policy start date.
Why Pre-Existing Conditions Are Typically Not Covered
Generally, including coverage for all pre-existing conditions would significantly increase the cost of insurance premiums. By excluding them, SafetyWing can maintain more affordable prices and focus on covering new, unexpected health issues that arise after your policy begins.
Cancelling Your SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Plan
Life happens, and sometimes you may need to cancel your insurance plan. SafetyWing offers different cancellation options depending on your chosen plan.
Essential Plan Cancellation
You can cancel your Essential plan at any time by stopping subscription payments through your dashboard or by contacting SafetyWing’s live chat support.
Complete Plan Cancellation
The Complete plan is a 12-month commitment. You can request cancellation within the first 15 days of your coverage start date or upon renewal. If you cancel mid-contract, you may be eligible for a refund of up to 65% of any unused coverage, provided you haven’t made any claims. Exceptions may apply for qualifying life events, such as getting married and being added to a spouse’s health insurance plan.
Pre-Approval for Procedures on the Complete Plan
For the Complete plan, any medical procedure anticipated to cost more than US$500 requires pre-approval from SafetyWing. This process helps prevent unnecessary treatments, manage healthcare costs, and ensures the procedure is covered under your policy. Obtaining pre-approval helps you avoid unexpected large medical bills.
If you anticipate a treatment exceeding $500, you can request pre-approval through your dashboard. Failure to obtain pre-approval for non-emergency procedures costing over $500 may result in a reimbursement of 30% less than the eligible amount.
Important Note for Emergencies
In case of an emergency where you pay for treatment costing over US$500, you must notify SafetyWing within 72 hours of the emergency by clicking the “I have an emergency” button in your dashboard. Failure to do so may result in a 30% reduction in your reimbursement, even if the treatment was otherwise fully covered.
